_Congrats to Las Comadres for participation on a show encompassing UCSD’s legacy of engagement on embodied critical creativity and community interaction through the work and events generated by several generations of artists professors & alumni, sensitively aware of the particular richness and tensions of its locality. The show Making Communities: Art and the Border is part of a series of activities celebrating UCSD’s Visual Arts Department 50th anniversary.
The transnational group of women artists, who came together as Las Comadres in 1988-1992 in the San Diego-Tijuana border region, was committed to perceiving the border as enabling rather than blocking dialogue and as a continuum of human interactions and memories of rich diversity and creative resistance to the powers of a dominant “norte”, not infrequently of familial and loving dimensions. The group included women from the United States, Mexico, UK and Argentina, of diverse racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds. It viewed itself as part of a new and evolving paradigm for the region, devoted to communicating across cultural, linguistic, artistic and political divisions. In 1990 we turned to activism in response to the rise of nativist and xenophobic demonstrations at the San Diego-Tijuana border. A multi-media installation, “La Vecindad/The Neighborhood,” within which a performance piece, “Border Boda,” was staged, reflected upon the group’s border activism and further thinking about the responsibilities of the artist. The installation and the performance were presented at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego and the Bridge Center for Contemporary Art in El Paso, Texas in 1990-1991, as well as on a composite re-versioned installation at Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego “” in 1992.
